Guest speaker Matan Kaminer, anthropologist and political activist at the Martin Buber Institute, Hebrew University, Jerusalem, will describe the emergence of Israeli left forces in the 1970s and ‘80s that rejected both Zionism and Soviet communism. Though destroyed as a coherent force by the Oslo accords and their aftermath, their legacy continues in newer formations that constitute the most consistent force pressing for democratic decolonization within Israeli Jewish society in collaboration with Palestinian civil resistance.

Joining him on a panel after the opening talk will be:

• Yassar Dahbour, who was born in a Palestinian refugee camp and has lived in Sacramento since 1991. He is president of the Palestine American League (PAL), a founder of Sacramento Democrats for Justice in Palestine and chair of the state Democratic Party’s Arab-American Caucus.
• David Mandel, longtime journalist and human rights attorney, member of Sacramento DSA and DSA’s national BDS/Palestine Working Group, active with Jewish Voice for Peace and the state Democrats’ Progressive Caucus.
• Claire Palmer, organizer and member of DSA Sacramento’s Executive Board.
