online – Brazil 2022 Elections

September 29, 2022 @ 4:00 pm - 5:00 pm

Please join us this Thursday, September 29th at 4pm PST / 7pm EST for a webcast:
“Brazil 2022 Elections: Rights and Democracy at Risk.”

Brazilians will go to the polls this Sunday, October 2, 2022, to vote in the first round of Brazil’s national elections. The President, the National Congress, Governors, state legislatures, and more will be on the ballot. Brazil’s democratic institutions are under real duress.

Former President, Ignacio Lula da Silva leads by wide margins in virtually every poll, but sitting President, Jair Bolsonaro, has openly rejected the legitimacy of any possible outcome other than his own re-election, mobilizing his followers to do the same.

Worries that an anti-democratic standoff could trigger a return to military rule are widespread. So are concerns about unfair electoral practices and even physical threats – especially against Black and Indigenous candidates, social activists, and academics who have spoken out against increasingly authoritarian practices.

Global Exchange, in collaboration with the communication studio Peninsula 360 Press, recently conducted a journalistic and social investigation in Brasilia and Rio de Janeiro in Brazil, to learn first-hand about the socio-political conditions before the elections. We invite you to hear a report back from these experts:

  • Beatriz Magaloni, Professor of Political Science, Stanford University
  • Anna Lee Mraz – Writer-Sociology, Feminism, Peninsula 360 Press
  • Fernando Cruz – Independent Journalist
  • Michael Fox – Independent Journalist, Brazil
  • Ted Lewis – Co-Executive Director, Global Exchange
RSVP
Global Exchange will provide coverage of the elections in Brazil over the coming month. We are sending a mission of international journalists to work with local journalists in Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, Salvador de Bahia, Brasilia, and the Amazon for the elections on October 2nd and again if a second round is needed on October 30th.

Please stay tuned for more updates in the coming weeks.
