Like the mythical Phoenix of the past, our SacPeace newsletter rises from the ashes once again. Today, they’re the ashes of a burned-out and crumbling Western civilization. Once again we lift our wings of hope, taking flight from apathy and despair to rise above all of the hate, political polarization, and economic chaos that surrounds us.
As before, we strive to make this a community-based publication. Not just us talking to you, but a place where your own voices need to be heard; an ongoing community conversation. What community? One that doesn’t exist yet, and needs to be created. Not just geographically, though we are in a local region. Not just by neighborhoods, although there are many neighborhoods and neighborhood associations in the area. And not just by political position, religious belief, or ethnicity, all of which tend to divide us.
The quest for peace transcends all of these possible divisions, seeking the well-being of all. It looks for a way to free us from militarism and war, which have been a plague on civilization for centuries. Despite the suffering it brings, for some reason continue to glorify war and its heroes. If we followed that logic in our own lives, we would also be honoring and celebrating dying of cancer. War is a sickness of our society, and we desperately need to find a cure. Years ago, someone sang, “Military madness was killing the country.” Sadly, that’s still true today, and will be until we put a stop it.
So, consider this your invitation to join us in the search for political sanity, and the path to a kinder and gentler society. The first step in that direction is to start thinking and talking among ourselves, and about the possible solutions we might consider exploring. Please share your own thoughts by dropping us a note at: sacpeace@sacpeace.com.
