Film Screening – Naila and the Uprising

October 7, 2022 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm

When a nation-wide uprising breaks out in 1987, a woman in Gaza must choose between love, family, and freedom. Undaunted, she embraces all three, joining a clandestine network of women in an inspiring story that weaves through the most vibrant, nonviolent mobilization in Palestinian history – the First Intifada.

Length (76 MINS)                                       Launch date Website http://nailaandtheuprising.com

Here’s an excellent opportunity to see a terrific documentary about the “first intifada,” the civil uprising that galvanized the West Bank and Gaza 1987-92 and led to the first negotiations between Israel and Palestinian representative, then to the Oslo accords. The film also examines how Oslo’s false hopes led to the demise of this robust popular resistance and eventually, to the horrific situation of today, with Israel effectively annexing more and more of the territory, upping the level of violence by settlers and soldiers and maintaining a choking closure of Gaza punctuated by occasional massive bombings.

Naila and the Uprising also highlights the roles of the title character and other women in leading much of the resistance at the time. You can see a trailer for the film at https://justvision.org/films/naila-and-the-uprising.

A discussion/Q&A after the film will start with the experiences of one participant and delve into the current state of Palestinian resistance to occupation and apartheid.
Note that the event is in person and outdoors. Bring a jacket if it’s chilly!  Doors open at 6.
